Alasdair McLellan, British, (b. 1974)
McLellan is a preeminent British photographer and director whose monographs serve as the primary vessel for his exploration of northern English heritage and masculinity. Often collaborating with the design duo M/M (Paris), his books are characterized by a cinematic, documentary-style aesthetic that mythologizes everyday British life.
His first major publication, Ultimate Clothing Company (2013), focused on the youth of Northern England, using his hometown of Doncaster as a backdrop to blend street-cast portraits with local landscapes. This was followed by Ceremony (2016), which documented soldiers of the British Army both in their ceremonial uniforms and in private, off-duty moments, further examining themes of regiment and masculinity. McLellan also chronicled the community surrounding the cult skate brand Palace in his book The Palace (2016), while Blondey 15-21 (2019) offered an intimate six-year study of his frequent muse, skater and artist Blondey McCoy.
In 2023, he released his most comprehensive project to date, Home and Away, a massive two-volume retrospective spanning 35 years of his career from 1987 to 2022. The collection features over 500 images, ranging from his very first photograph taken at age 13 to portraits of global icons like Harry Styles and Kate Moss, all unified by his consistent tender gaze and signature springtime light.
Most recently, his 2024 book Scotland, published as part of the Louis Vuitton Fashion Eye series, captures the sublime and rugged beauty of the Scottish landscape through his distinctively romantic lens.
