Marilyn Minter, American, born 1948

In visceral and gaudy paintings, photographs, and films inspired by the aesthetics of fashion imagery, Marilyn Minter examines desire and the commodification of the female body. She’s best known for her glossy, hyperrealistic enamel-on-metal paintings that depict close-ups of women’s feet, made-up lips and eyes, and other body parts. Her subject matter can veer into the grotesque; liquid drips from a gold-toothed smile, for example, or glistening high heels splash around in metallic fluid. Minter often captures her subjects through panes of wet or steamed glass, commenting on the voyeuristic relationship between artist and muse. Minter has been the subject of solo exhibitions around the world and featured in the 2006 Whitney Biennial. In 1998, she was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and her work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art, among others.
