Richard Misrach's color reverse photographs, often referred to as his "Negative" series or Notations, involve a process where he foregrounds the digital negative as a finished work of art. This technique results in a palette of "reversed" colors—where blue skies become orange and lush greens turn into magentas—creating a surreal, otherworldly atmosphere. Misrach began this experimentation in the mid-2000s, utilizing advances in digital capture to create images with immense detail and an inverted color spectrum.

The print came with the special edition of the book Petrochemical, which also included another print by Kate Orff.
Richard Misrach is one of the most influential American photographers of the last 50 years, credited with helping to pioneer the use of large-format color photography as a fine art medium. Born in 1949 in Los Angeles, he is best known for his ongoing epic project, Desert Cantos, which explores the complex relationship between humans and the American desert landscape.
