Sascha Pflaeging, German-American, b. 1967
Pflaeging is a German-born American photographer based in New York City. Initially establishing his career in editorial and high-fashion photography, Pflaeging earned widespread critical attention through his powerful, humanistic portraiture.
His profile expanded significantly following the 2010 exhibition and published catalog When Janey Comes Marching Home: Portraits of Women Combat Veterans, created in collaboration with writer Laura Browder. The project featured at institutions including the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History showcased striking, candid portraits of female service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. His work from this series and related projects now resides in major institutional holdings, including the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
