Wolfgang Tillmans, German (b August 16, 1968, Remscheid, Germany)

Photographer and multidisciplinary artist, Wolf is renowned for his innovative approach to photography and installation art. His work spans various genres, including portraiture, still life, landscape, abstraction, and video, often exploring themes of identity, community, and the transient nature of life.

Tillmans gained prominence in the early 1990s with candid photographs capturing the youth and club scenes in London and Berlin, reflecting the spirit of a generation. His distinctive exhibition style involves non-hierarchical arrangements of unframed photographs, photocopies, and other media, creating immersive environments that challenge traditional presentation methods.

In 2000, Tillmans became the first photographer and the first non-British artist to win the Turner Prize, a significant recognition of his impact on contemporary art.  His work has been the subject of major retrospectives at institutions such as Tate Modern in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2022 and the Pompidou Center in 2025 before its closure for renovation.

Beyond photography, Tillmans has engaged in music production, video art, and activism, notably campaigning against Brexit and the rise of nationalism in Europe.  He also established Between Bridges, a nonprofit exhibition space in Berlin dedicated to promoting overlooked or politically engaged artists.

Tillmans continues to live and work between Berlin and London, contributing to contemporary art through his diverse and thought-provoking practice.
