Eikoh Hosoe (1933–2024) was a highly influential Japanese photographer and filmmaker known for his experimental, surreal, and psychologically charged black and white images that explored themes of the human body, death, and eroticism. He abandoned traditional documentary photography after World War II to create work that combined photography with elements of dance, theater, and Japanese mythology. Hosoe's career was marked by important collaborations, such as with writer Yukio Mishima for Barakei: Ordeal by Roses and Butoh dancerTatsumi Hijikata for Kamaitachi.
