Taiji Matsue

Taiji Matsue, Japanese, b. 1963

Matsue is a contemporary Japanese photographer renowned for his highly precise, formalist aerial landscapes and topographical surveys that strip away conventional perspective, shadows, and horizons. Born in 1963 in Tokyo, Matsue graduated from the Department of Geography at the University of Tokyo in 1987, a background that deeply informs his scientific, analytical approach to the photographic medium.

His practice centers on achieving absolute flatness and uniformity across his images, creating a democratic view of the earth where natural formations and human architecture carry equal visual weight. To achieve this, Matsue travels globally to capture landscapes, cityscapes, and historical sites from extreme high angles or directly from helicopters and airplanes. He intentionally shoots under bright, overcast skies to eliminate heavy shadows and carefully frames his compositions to exclude the sky and horizon line, transforming expansive three-dimensional terrains into intricate, two-dimensional surfaces packed with microscopic detail.

Throughout his career, Matsue has compiled these rigorous geological and urban taxonomies into celebrated, conceptually driven monographs. His notable publications include Landscapes, LIM, TYO-WTC, CC, Cell, Gazetteer, Hashima, and Surficial Survey, alongside his extensive alphabetical, site-specific country series like JP-22 and JP-34 Hiroshima. By using consistent framing and treating every element within the composition with equal clarity, his work bridges the gap between objective geographic documentation and pure, abstract formalism.

Matsue’s work has earned significant critical acclaim, including the prestigious Kimura Ihei Award in 2002. His prints are held in major public and institutional collections worldwide, and his career is recognized for its uncompromising exploration of how photography can record, flatten, and systematically reorder the surface of the world.
