The second installment in Sobol's Greenland Trilogy, following his 2004 debut Sabine, drawn from photographs taken in Eastern Greenland between 1999 and 2002. The book centers on Sobol's friendship with James, an Inuit hunter and fisherman from the settlement of Tiniteqilaaq, and the time Sobol spent living alongside him as he worked to sustain his family through hunting and fishing. Through James, Sobol learned to read the ice, identify seals, and absorb an unspoken discipline of knowing when to speak and when to stay silent. The photographs trace the intimacy and warmth of James's household before it was upended by the death of his wife and his subsequent move to Tasiilaq, making the book as much an elegy for a vanished way of life as a portrait of friendship.
