Larry Fink, American (1941–2023)
Fink was an influential American photographer, documentarian, and educator whose career spanned over six decades.
Raised in a politically active, left-leaning household in New York, Fink famously referred to himself as a "Marxist from Long Island", a sociopolitical background that deeply informed his observational, class-conscious lens.
Fink studied under legendary street photographer Lisette Model. Her emphasis on psychological empathy, stark realism, and capturing the unfiltered essence of subjects shaped his approach to human social spaces.
His visual style relies on heavy, hand-held off-camera flash. By illuminating specific gestures, facial expressions, and textures out of dark backgrounds with dramatic side-lighting, Fink created dynamic, almost theatrical compositions that expose social tension, vulnerability, and intimacy.
Fink’s seminal project, Social Graces (published as a landmark monograph by Aperture in 1984), juxtaposes photographs of wealthy Manhattanites at black-tie galas, Studio 54, and debutante balls with candid portraits of working-class families and neighbors in rural Martins Creek, Pennsylvania.
Social Graces was featured in a landmark solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1979. Over his career, Fink published numerous books covering subjects ranging from Beatnik culture and Andy Warhol’s Factory to boxers and political figures.
Fink spent more than 50 years as an influential educator, teaching at institutions such as the Yale University School of Art, Cooper Union, and most notably Bard College, where he served on the faculty for nearly three decades. He received two Guggenheim Fellowships, two National Endowment for the Arts grants, and an International Center of Photography (ICP) Infinity Award.
